What is Star Mountain?

In Jerusalem, in 1867, the Moravian's began to work with lepers at the Jesushilfe Hospital. Later, In 1960, the facility moved to Ramallah, at Star Mountain. After leprosy was cured in 1980, Star Mountain officially became a center for intellectually disabled persons. Star Mountain provides the children with vital education. They are taught basic abilities, they receive physical therapy, and as they grow older they are taught job skills so they can support themselves. This facility is still owned and fully supported by the Moravian Church, which provides approximately 40% of their annual budget.
In March 2012, with support from the Annie B Mission, a speech therapist was hired at Star Mountain. However, soon afterwards she was accepted into a Masters program for speech therapy in the United States, so she withdrew from the position. (Our congratulations to her for her achievements!)
In December 2012, The Red Crescent Society conducted a speech therapy workshop with the staff at Star Mountain. In January and February 2013, two teachers from Star Mountain visited The Red Crescent Society where they received in-field training. They sat in on actual speech therapy sessions, learned about how plans work for individual clients, and they were shown how educational toys were used for speech therapy. These teachers taught what they had learned to the rest of the staff at Star Mountain. The Red Crescent Society continues to supervise the staff’s progress once a month. Also, Star Mountain hired a part-time speech therapist in February 2013. She has over 10 years of experience and has been helping the members at Star Mountain as well as people in the community. She has also been able to assist in training the Star Mountain staff.
To date, Annie B Mission has raised 21,000 dollars for Star Mountain.
